On This Day: USA Wins Gold in 2000

🥎 ON THIS DAY — SEPTEMBER 26, 2000 🥇

Twenty-six years ago today, Team USA completed one of the great comeback stories in Olympic softball history.

After entering the Sydney Games as the defending Olympic champions, the Americans suddenly found themselves in unfamiliar territory—dropping three consecutive games during round-robin play to Japan, China and Australia.

But when their backs were against the wall, they responded.

USA battled its way through the medal round and earned another shot at undefeated Japan in the Gold Medal Game.

The championship turned into an absolute classic.

Tied 1–1 after seven innings, the game went to extras. In the top of the eighth, Dot Richardson drove home the go-ahead run, and the United States held on for a dramatic 2–1 victory.
